Originally derived from 1930s newspaper competitions, where the aim of the game was to track down the 'mystery' correspondent of said newspaper and collect money from them for completing the said task. Famously employed as a plot device in the opening chapter of 'Brighton Rock' by Graham Greene.

Now generally a synonym for 'har-har, I've blown your cover haven't I?'
