American author of Speculative Fiction (more so than Fantasy Fiction or SF). Her work is liked by those who claim they "do not like" genre fiction. Has recently come into the most fruitful stretch of her career -- and she is 83!
Along with China Mieville, she was Guest of Honor at Wis Con 2003.
