Cornmarket Street


Contrary to rumour, this is not one of the circles of hell.

This is because it is not a circle.

However, in order to avoid confusion, on Saturdays it is granted honorary circular status.

Shopping street in Oxford City Centre, notable features of this street include the Golden Cross shopping centre (and access to the Covered Market), tower (insert name, those who know), the Clarendon Centre, HMV, HSBC, WHSmith's, Waterstones, the Virgin Megastore, McDonalds, BurgerKing, and other demonic entities. The street runs between the junction of George Street, Broad Street, Cornmarket Street, and St Giles (well, Magdalen Street) to the North, and the Carfax Tower to the South.

Millions of pounds and people were spent and pissed off respectively while the entire thing was being re-paved in 2001ish as part of the pedestrianisation scheme. It looked really nice, until winter came. Expanding ice caused the flagstones to crack, and parts collected huge puddles of water that refused to drain away. The whole thing is going to be coated in concrete or tarmac or something. Reminding me of something Mike Froggatt was saying about communism - anyone remember the details? - AM No, but if it was Mike and communism it was probably something about how Tim'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. -- WJR
