An abbreviation for "Rossum's Universal Robots" and the title of a play by Karel Capek (and his brother Josef). Notable for the first use of the term 'robot' to describe an artificial life-form; interestingly, Rossum's robots are biological rather than mechanical, resembling Blade Runner's replicants far more than Asimov's machines.
