The Animatrix

The Animatrix is a series of short animated films which together form a prequel of sorts to The Matrix Reloaded. Some are CGI, some anime, and some straight American animation; it provides some backstory, illustrates the future history of the world, and plays around with some of the possibilities of the world of The Matrix.

Is this sort of thing a new trend? IMDB trivia tells us that something similar was done for 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle'; "In the weeks prior to the film's release, a series of short animated adventures featuring the voice of John Forsythe as Charlie were produced and distributed over the Internet. These adventures expand upon events shown at the start of the film.".
