The Westfahl Ghetto Hypothesis

In a recent article in Inter Zone 190, Gary Westfahl claimed that the reason why SF continues to be 'ghettoised' is that SF writers do not receive literary awards, reviews in literary journals, academic attention or invites to appear on literary panels. He argues that this is because they are widely-read and therefore financially successful, and hence (a) they do not deign to involve themselves with Straight Fiction events and (b) when they do they are not as well behaved as other writers, ie. poets, who are, in his words, 'beggars'. My impression from speaking to SF writers is that very few of them, probably no more than in other genres or within the Main Stream itself, make a healthy living from writing. Is Westfahl, as per usual, talking utter bollocks? Can anyone provide any insight into how profitable SF writing is as opposed to non-SF writing? -- MF
