Tiptree Award


The James Tiptree Jr Award, given for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender.

"In February of 1991 at Wis Con (the world's only feminist-oriented science fiction convention), award-winning SF author Pat Murphy announced the creation of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, an annual literary prize for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender. Pat created the award in collaboration with author Karen Joy Fowler. The Tiptree Award is pleased and proud to have Karen and Pat as its 'founding mothers.'"

The 2002 award was won jointly by M John Harrison (for Light), and John Kessel (for 'Stories For Men'). The 2003 award was won by Matt Ruff for Set This House In Order?.
