War Of The Worlds

Martians attack Earth in war machines at the turn of the century, vanquishing the puny human military, only to be stopped in their tracks by germs.

Does this feel a little 'stop me if you've heard this before'? Doubtless. But HG Wells was there first.

Originally a book, but then a radio program (with which Orson Welles managed to scare the bejesus out of America Land - although not nearly much as has come to be believed over time due to various urban myths), a musical (from which people are likely only to recognise the 'Eve of the War' theme) and of course several movies and a piss-poor television series.

Lest we forget, there was also Sherlock Holmes Against The Martians, and the delightful homage that was volume two of Alan Moore's League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. (And then, on the absurdist side, there is always Santa Claus Conquers The Martians ... )
