Wireless local area networking; Wi-Fi = Wireless-Fidelity. The point being wireless internet access.

Terrible, pretentious, over-trendy name. The technology has nothing particularly to do with fidelity (it doesn't even have forward error correction! (er, doesn't it? -- Ed.)), but the chance to pun on Hi Fi was, it seems, too good to miss.
