The bottom layer is a linen chemise
Over that goes a ruffled petticoat. The ruffles help to hold the skirt out.
Over that goes a decorative forepart, just in the front. This is why there's a gap in the ruffles of the petticoat.
The forepart is laced onto the petticoat to hold it in place.
Unlace the gown nearly completely before putting it on.
Then put it on.
Then lace it up, the first lace goes across the top from behind, checking both sides of the lace are the same length..
Then lace as you would lace shoes, skipping two each time
When it's part laced, the bust needs to be lifted into the right place (picture NOT shown)
Tighten it up to a medium tightness.
Then slide the stomacher in - either from the top down or from the bottom up, as shown.
Then tighten up the lacing.
