SOS Children

Team Gila Monsters is aiming to raise £3000 for SOS Children. SOS Children are currently working on providing food, medicine and practical help for 48,000 African children orphaned by the Aids Epidemic. In some African countries it is estimated 40% of the working-age population has contracted HIV, with younger and more successful workers being most likely to be affected. However, this is never uniform across a population; 40% of a whole African country will mean there are areas where virtually everyone has contracted HIV-AIDS. The worst affected countries include Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. In places village after village have no young adults left.

SOS Children has developed a compassionate strategy for AIDS orphans, where the children are not taken from their familar background but instead strengthens the village community so that they are able to support them. Supported children are visited regularly with deliveries of food and medicine where necessary, as well as practical advice from well trained support staff

Charities in The Gambia

The Plymouth-Banjul Challenge is intended to benefit registered charities in The Gambia, a country rich in scenery and wildlife but poor in basic infrastructure. Vehicles and equipment are received in Banjul and auctioned off. The money raised is then pooled for distribution by the Grants Allocation Sub-Committee. 40% of the funds raised will be divided equally between the Association of Small-Scale Enterprises in Tourism and the Gambian National Olympic Committee. The remaining 60% will be distributed to non-profit making companies that are registered and operating in The Gambia and are engaged in activities that support children, youth and sports development associations and small scale tourism projects. The 2005 Plymouth-Banjul Challenge raised £142,125 for good causes.*
