The organisers of the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge have thrown down the gauntlet to those of us with budgets too limited to tackle the great Paris-Dakar Rally.
On Boxing Day 2005, three physics graduate students will be leaving Oxford,
England to head for Banjul, Gambia. The epic 3500 mile fundraising journey
will pass through minefields, the Sahara desert and much of West Africa. The
car, a 1987 Renault 5, could hardly be less suitable for the journey. Not one of
them has mechanical experience. The car has numerous oil leaks, bald tyres,
and two wheel drive - not at all useful in the sand!
Why are they doing this? They are part of “Team Gila Monsters” - participants
in the Plymouth Banjul Challenge, a charitable fundraising event which
requires that teams drive from Plymouth to Banjul, spending no more than
£100 on the cars they take, and no more than £15 on repairs. Amazingly, in
last years challenge, a large proportion of the cars did reach Banjul!
The team is aiming to raise £3000 in sponsorship for SOS Children, who are
currently working on providing food, medicine and practical help for 48,000
African children orphaned by the Aids Epidemic.
Should they reach Banjul, the car is to be auctioned off and the proceeds
donated to Gambian Charities.
