  • `Intra'-frame encoding - compressing a single frame by itself
  • `Inter'-frame encoding - compressing a frame with reference to neighbouring frames (temporal processing)
• Intraframe encoding based on a FDCT system, nearly identical to JPEG
• Interframe encoding used is block based motion compensated prediction using motion estimation
• Again, processes not specific algorithms defined for many operations, allows proprietary encoding techniques
