*Discussions* - Spin-offs as SF literature? *Authors* - MMS - BenJeapes? CharlieStross? - Who can we get? *Movies* - TheSecondComing and WhenWorldsCollide, both recently acquired on DVD -- NH - Ring vs The Ring , although this is probably too obsessive for a regular meeting. _Isn't Lord of the Rings part one out on video soon, if not already? That could fit into the theme :) --TL_ Part 1 has been out on video since before christmas. Don't think Part2 is out yet though. - TwentyEightDaysLater vs DeadCreatures . Modern British zombie flicks. The former is by AlexGarland and DannyBoyle, and the latter is by nobody famous but has been described as what a zombie film made by MikeLeigh would look like. _Groovy. --TL_ - Clash of the Titans (stop-motion special effects) V. ToyStory 2 (all-singing-all-dancing-all-CGI) or alternatively Men In Black 2 just for the fun of it. --TL How about Titan A__E ? _good idea, perhaps --TL_ _Titan A__E would be an excellent choice... it is quite impressive._ -- WJR - Dr Strangelove ? -- WJR - 'Moebius' , , . - 'It's alive' , but probably not the sequels 'It Lives Again' or 'It's Alive III: Island of the Alive' (of which it was said "Never before has such an atrocity been sinned upon celluloid.") (i kid you not). The former is classic SF horror from the 70s. From the IMDB user comments ... -- "This movie is about inane as they come as far as believability goes, but so what, i enjoy inane movies. And if they're inane horror movies, why that's just icing on the cake. I've seen it several times and never get tired of the killer mutant newborn baby..." -- "I finally did get to see the movie in the mid-eighties and its not as good as what took place in my head. But until my head comes out on VHS or preferably, DVD, this will have to do, I guess, if you want to see monster baby movies." - We could possibly show it along with 'Q' (), also by LarryCohen - 'New Rose Hotel', the _other_ film of a WilliamGibson book (). - See _(nice domain name! -- TA)_ for some mentions of 70s SF films. I for one would rather like to see FutureShock - yes, the film of the book. - The Day The Earth Stood Still v. The Man Who Fell To Earth - differing takes on a first contact situation, both seminal in their own ways. - Dagon - based on HPLovecraft; the only good film to be so. _Ask me about my amusing keyword-related anecdote about this (involves ; possibly not all that amusing, really). -- TA_ -- Experimental data confirms that the anecdote is not amusing at all. -- TA -- There's Cast A Deadly Spell, too (). It's not based on Lovecraft's directly, but having the protagonist called H. Phillip Lovecraft is not the most subtle of homages. It is also good. I believe that JeremyDennis has a copy. -- AW - The Hidden Fortress ; this is, allegedly, the inspiration for Star Wars. It's also a good Kurosawa samurai film. - How about a 'recap of good recent SF films for those have been in Russia' evening, of 'Solaris' (oh, the irony) and 'Donny Darko'. -- Cheerful! - More from the vaguely-related-to-HPLovecraft dept (somebody _shoot_ me -- TA): - How about the film of K-P__A__X (guy who may or may not be from outer space)? - Or even a Vampire Night with whatever bloodsucker-related combo can be rustled up? - Some sort of PunishmentPark/BattleRoyale/RollerBall 'P__E lessons writ large' combo Of course, what we _got_ was "CelebritySFDeathmatch". (Comment made for the pure purpose of generating a Wikiname. -- WJR) Are we at some point going to get round to playing the game of a ThousandBlankWhiteCards again? - _yes yes yes yes_ Some sort of argument, with or without memes, about what should be the constituent parts of a future OUSFGTShirt, would be worth a go --TL _(done)_
