An American SF and Fantasy Fiction writer.
Perhaps best known for her SF books The Left Hand Of Darkness and The Dispossessed, and The Earthsea Trilogy.
It is probably unnecessary to point out how famous and important she is.
(She also does very nice embroidery, and is a close friend of Carol Emshwiller)
