Cherwell Singers
Dvorak - Stabat Mater and other works
University Church, High Street, Oxford
Saturday 21st March, 7.30pm
With the approach of Passiontide the Cherwell Singers present a rare
performance of the original piano version of the most extensive setting
of the thirteenth century hymn to Mary, the Stabat Mater by Antonin Dvorak.
Written as a reaction to the death of his daughter in 1876, Dvorak had to
lay aside the orchestration of the work due to his other obligations, but
the smaller scale and more intimate setting provided by this original
piano version is perfect for a chamber choir such as ours. The University
Church (with its own dedication to Mary) owns a new Bluthner grand piano
which is one of the finest instruments in Oxford, and will be played for
this performance by the London based pianist Martin Cousin.
Complementing the Dvorak will be a pair of unaccompanied motets by another
late nineteenth century Catholic composer from the Austro-Hungarian empire,
Anton Bruckner. We do hope you can join us for this programme.
