map tile server not responding

The http://ustile.npemap.org.uk tile server no longer returns map tiles. With your permission, I reference these tiles from my web site http://www.svrsig.org/gwmap/Map1940s.htm and this now just shows blank. For example the URL http://ustile.npemap.org.uk/scaled6/054/038.jpg is accepted as an affress but returns 'no mapping here'. What is going wrong please? One suggestion made by you when you gave permission to reference the tiles was that I hosted the tiles (nearly 2Gbytes is not a trivial amount of space) on my server. But the mirror site (which has the tar files) is also now not available... Free postcodes mailing list

Hi, I've set up a new mailing list for the general discussion of free postcode dataset collection and maintenance in the UK, with reference to existing sites like freethepostcode.org, npemap.org.uk and openstreetmap.org; the aim is to collect wisdom and experience and maybe coordinate future activities in this field. Source field in fulllist

Hi, As of 17th May, the source field in the downloadable fulllist of postcodes at: http://www.npemap.org.uk/data/fulllist ...seems to have gone awry. Where it used to list Dracos, Freethepostcode, etc, it now shows "ARRAY(0x????????)". Cheers, Chris. -- Chris Cowley Grok Developments Ltd

OSM and postcodes

I am a keen enthusiast for NPE maps and Free the postcode etc. However, I frequently find that it is difficult to locate a point on NPE maps, especially where an area has been redeveloped or was a green field in the 1940s. Postcodes & copyright

I have a question. I like the efforts made to collect postcode data by NPE and Free the Postcode, and have contributed data to all three projects. However, I don't understand why collecting postcode data through sites like NPE and Free the Postcode is not infringing Royal Mail's copyright. When I added my postcode to Free the Postcode, the co-ordinates came from my GPS, and I got the postcode from the previous owners, but it must ultimately have come from the Royal Mail. I don't understand why I did not violate the Royal Mail's copyright, but why getting the postcodes from OSM & search engines (as was previously suggested) would violate copyright. Can anyone explain the difference? Russ

Using OSM and search engines to find postcodes

OpenStreetMap has tons of road names, those road names exist within some town, the town exists within a county. If we search the web for "road name, town name, county, " and then read and validate the next few characters from the search result we can find every postcode that has a business on it, without infringing on Royal Mail's database rights. By using the mean location of the waypoints along the road, we have an approximate GPS location. No difference between Currentlist and Fulllist
