- Numerous standards, notably:
- MPEG-1, 1991, designed for 352x240, 30 fps NTSC or 352x288, 25 fps PAL optimised for bitrate ~1.5 Mb/sec. Used on VCDs.
- MPEG-2, 1994, designed for digital TV broadcasting, 720x480, 30 fps NTSC ~15 Mb/sec
- Extended to HDTV (high definition TV) (1920x1080, 30 fps, 80Mb/sec)
- Used for DVD (720x480, 30 fps, 10Mb/sec)
- Adds support for interlaced video etc.
- MPEG-4, 1999, extensive standard, best known for wavelet compression / DivX ;-)
