• HDTV 1920x1080, 30 fps, 8 bits per channel requires 1.5 Gb/sec uncompressed
• A DVD would hold max 5 secs of uncompressed video at that res
• 6 MHz channel for transmission therefore maximum possible bitrate is 18 Mb/sec
• Requires compression of 83:1
• HDTV is meant to look good (better than analogue), ie. not full of block and quantisation artifacts!
