Steam Punk
A subgenre of Science Fiction, in which radical technological advance takes place in the early industrial era; the name comes from the fusion of Cyber Punk's edgy techno-noir with, well, steam engines.
Major works:
- 'The Wild Wild West' (60s US TV show, 90s US film)
- 'Queen Victoria's Bomb', Ronald Clark
- 'Pavane', Keith Roberts
- 'A Nomad of the Time Streams' trilogy, Michael Moorcock
- 'A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!', Harry Harrison
- (?) 'Laputa Castle In The Sky', dir. Hayao Miyazaki (movie)
- 'Back To The Future Part III', dir. Robert Zemeckis? (movie)
- 'The Difference Engine?' William Gibson and Bruce Sterling - arguably the classic work of Steam Punk
- 'The Time Ships?', Stephen Baxter
- The Steampunk Trilogy?, Paul Di Filippo
- (?) 'The Diamond Age', Neal Stephenson
- League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Alan Moore (comic book series)
- (?) 'The Light Ages', Ian R Mac Leod
- I think TLA probably isn't steampunk; there's really very little technology, and too much magic. On the other hand, it looks like the sequel (Electricity) will see the industrialisation of aether-driven England, so that may well turn out to have a place on this list.
- 'Seventy Two Letters?', Ted Chiang
